<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system with a position detection unit capable of detecting a passage position of an intruder in a simple configuration at low cost. <P>SOLUTION: In a monitoring system for detecting intrusion by interruption of an alert line S and monitoring an intruder H, transmitters T and receivers R of an opposed-type alert line interruption detection sensor 2 for setting the alert lines S composed of detection waves in an alert area A are placed so as to face each other and form the alert lines S including at least two detection waves S1 and S2 having transmission paths substantially horizontal when viewed from the side and mutually oblique when viewed from above.
