1282022 Super-conductors E KANDA 31 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968 19 March 1969(3)] 53626/69 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A compound super-conductor is produced by laminating components of the compound, winding the laminate into a coil, covering the coil with a shielding layer, enclosing in a sheath, reducing the cross-section of the assembly and then heat-treating to react the components to form the compound. A first layer of the laminate is selected from Nb, V, Mo and alloys and inter-metallic compounds thereof, and a second layer is selected from Sn, Al, Zr, Ti, Pd, Be, V, Si, Ga, C, Au, and alloys thereof. The shielding layer is selected from V, Pd, Nb, Ta, Zr, alloys thereof and stainless steel, and the sheath is selected from Cu, Al, Au, Cd, alloys and intermetallic compounds thereof and stainless steel. A strengthening member may be incorporated by winding the laminate round the member, placing the coiled laminate alongside the member before covering with the shielding layer, or placing the coiled and shielded laminate alongside the member before inserting into the sheath. In examples the following super-conductors are produced: Nb 3 Al by coiling sheets of Nb and Al, covering with a Nb shielding layer and enclosing in a sheath of Cu or stainless steel coated internally with Cu or Al. Nb 3 Sn by coiling sheets of Nb and Sn either alone or round a steel rod, covering with a Nb shielding layer and inserting in a Cu pipe, or by coiling sheets of Nb coated with Sn by immersion in a bath, covering with Nb and inserting in a Cu sheath, the resulting structure being rolled to form a plate; Nb 3 (Al 0À8 Ge 0À2 ) by coiling sheets of Nb and Al 20 wt. per cent Ge, covering with Nb and inserting in a Cu sheath: V 3 Si by coiling sheets of V coated with Si by vacuum evaporation, covering with V and inserting into a stainless steel sheath; NbC by coiling sheets of Nb coated with C by sputtering, covering with Nb and inserting into a stainless steel sheath; V 3 Ga by coiling sheets of V coated with Ga by immersion in a bath, covering with V and inserting into a stainless steel sheath. |
