<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eccentric optical system capable of projecting an image of an image display element to an observer's eye-ball as a virtual image by one optical element which is very small, light-weight and has the high degree of freedom in shape design. <P>SOLUTION: A prism optical system includes a prism of which the space formed by an optical surface having at least two surfaces mutually eccentric to axial principal rays of an incident luminous flux is filled with a medium having a refractive index greater than 1.
