<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical access apparatus and method with which deficiencies of the conventional art are overcome. <P>SOLUTION: The surgical access apparatus includes a single valve that forms a seal with a body wall and provides an access channel into a body cavity. The valve has properties for creating a zero seal in the absence of an instrument, and an instrument seal together with instruments having a full range of diameters. The valve preferably includes an ultragel comprised of an elastomer and an oil providing elongation greater than 1,000% and durometer less than 5 Shore A. The single valve can be used as a hand port in which the instrument comprises a sergeon's arm, which enables the access to the body cavity by a hand. A method for making the surgical access apparatus includes the combining of a gelling agent with an oil, preferably by molding. A method for use includes steps for creating an opening with the instrument. In a specific step, an organ is removed from the body cavity through the single valve, and the instrument seal can be created in the condition that the organ is addressed to the outside of the body cavity. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
