<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel shortage determining apparatus for a general-purpose engine, determining whether the general-purpose engine having a so-called electronic governor is out of fuel, so as to prevent a trouble such as afterburning. <P>SOLUTION: The general-purpose engine is connected to a fuel supply system in which a fuel pump driven by an electric motor pumps up fuel stored in a fuel tank to supply the fuel, and has a so-called electronic governor that is an actuator opening and closing a throttle valve installed in an intake pipe so as to achieve a target engine speed set by an operator. In the general-purpose engine, a value of the current to be supplied from the fuel pump to the electric motor is compared with a first (fuel shortage determination) threshold value.
