<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact device which can ensure insulation performance, while protecting a housing container from the heat of electric arc. <P>SOLUTION: A contact device comprises: a contact block 1 having a fixed terminal 11 and a movable contact piece 20 housed in a housing container 10; a drive block 2 for driving the movable contact piece 20; a joining member 35 which is fixed to an edge of an opening formed on a face of the housing container 10 opposing to the drive block 2, and which constitutes a sealing member for sealing a housing space where the fixed terminal 11 and the movable contact piece 20 are housed; and a protective member 6 which attracts electric arc so as to protect a joint portion between the housing container 10 and the joining member 35 from electric arc, while at the same time insulating the joint portion. The protective member 6 comprises an insulation member 60 arranged between the movable contact piece 20 and the drive block 2, and a metal member 61 attached to a portion of the insulation member 60 opposing to the movable contact piece 20.
