An image processing apparatus calculates luminances for pixels that make up an image and calculates the average luminance of the calculated luminances. From among pixels of the calculated luminances, the image processing apparatus identifies each of the luminances that has a value equal to or greater than a distinguishing value and calculates a bright-portion ratio of the identified luminance in the image. The image processing apparatus creates a luminance histogram and calculates a distribution value indicating a distribution level of the luminance distribution in a region corresponding to a luminance having a value equal to or greater than the distinguishing value in the created luminance histogram. The image processing apparatus determines whether the average luminance is equal to or less than a first threshold, whether the bright-portion ratio is equal to or greater than a second threshold, and whether the distribution value is equal to or greater than a third threshold. |
