The engine has a working piston (4) translationally movable in a working cylinder (5) and defining a working chamber (6). The working chamber is connected with a high pressure line (8) and a low pressure line (10) via respective valves. The working chamber acts together with a control piston (13). A displacement path of the control piston is adjustable by a control element (20). The control element is designed according to an electromechanical or hydraulic principle. A regulating rod (19) i.e. linear piston rod, is arranged between the control element and the control piston.
