摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a cutting insert formed of surface-coated TiCN based cermet which has improved chipping resistance and crack resistance and can maintain the finished surface accuracy of a cut material over a long period. <P>SOLUTION: After the predetermined-shape cutting insert formed of the TiCN based cermet is produced by molding and sintering material powder, wet blast treatment is applied to the surface thereof for imparting a residual compression stress of 450-1,000 MPa to a hard phase of the surface part of the insert and at the same time smoothing the surface roughness of the insert to be 0.2 &mu;m or smaller in arithmetical mean roughness Ra at a cut-off value of 0.08 mm, and a hard coated layer is formed on the surface with vapor deposition in a physical vapor deposition method. Thus, the cutting insert formed of the surface-coated TiCN based cermet is manufactured which has improved chipping resistance and crack resistance and can maintain the finished surface accuracy of the cut material over a long period. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
