The present invention relates to a device for inspecting a moving metal strip, including: a first electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) (2) including a first ultrasonic-wave emitter, said waves being emitted from the emitter so as to be incident on a first edge of a surface of the strip, wherein the emitter is not in contact with the strip; a second electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) (3a) including an ultrasonic-wave receiver, the wave being received by means of the emergence thereof from an area of the surface of the strip toward the receiver, wherein the receiver is not in contact with the strip; and a processing unit coupled to the second electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) so as to provide at least one inspection criterion using at least one signature of the ultrasonic waves measured at the second electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT), characterized in that the area is located on the strip such that a wave path between the first edge of the strip and said area is aligned in a linear direction and is mainly transverse to the moving direction of the strip.
