<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data storage system having a barrier which can reduce an erasure magnetic flux and increase a writing capability. <P>SOLUTION: The data storage system includes a writing element. The writing element includes a writing magnetic pole having a flare area. A magnetic flux barrier is arranged along the flare area of the writing magnetic pole. The magnetic flux barrier is illustratively made of inplane magnetic anisotropic material having a magnetization easy plane. In another embodiment, the data storage system includes a writing element having an air bearing surface and a shield in the air bearing surface. In the shield, magnetic permeability is almost zero. The shield illustratively includes positive and negative magnetically permeable layers that are alternately provided.
