A focal-plane shutter is provided with: a rear curtain lever which can drive a rear curtain; a first lever which can drive a front curtain; a second lever which is arranged on the same axis as the first lever, and which has an engagement section which abuts the first lever so as to be able to apply pressing force to the first lever such that the front curtain opens an aperture; a self-holding solenoid which can hold the first lever in a non-electrified state so that the front curtain is in a state wherein the aperture is open; a front curtain electromagnet and a rear curtain electromagnet which can hold the second lever and the rear curtain lever respectively by means of electrification; and a setting lever which carries out setting such that the second lever and the rear curtain lever abut the front curtain electromagnet and the rear curtain electromagnet respectively. The focal-plane shutter is capable of selectively switching between a first mode wherein the second lever and the rear curtain lever are set in a state wherein the front curtain and the rear curtain have opened apertures, and a second mode wherein the second lever and the rear curtain lever are set in a state wherein the front curtain has a closed aperture and the rear curtain has an opened aperture.
