<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication mode setting apparatus capable of extending a communication distance of wireless personal area communication and also executing actual communication without problems. <P>SOLUTION: When confirming whether or not an electronic key 2 approaches a reader/writer 10, an RF circuit impedance is set low (a Q factor of an antenna 14 is set high), thereby setting an operation mode of the reader/writer 10 to a detection mode. Therefore, the approach of the electronic key 2 can be detected remotely. Furthermore, when the approach of the electronic key 2 is detected under the detection mode, the RF circuit impedance is set high (the Q factor of the antenna 14 is set low), thereby setting the operation mode of the reader/writer 10 to a communication mode.
