<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to acquire digital image data of high quality in an image imaging apparatus which detects an optical image with an imaging device, and acquires digital image data. <P>SOLUTION: An image imaging apparatus comprises: an imaging device which is provided with a plurality of photoelectric conversion element, and converts into a pixel signal image information which input light holds, and outputs it for every photoelectric conversion element; pixel signal synthesizing means which synthesizes by a prescribed number the pixel signal output from the imaging device for every photoelectric conversion element; and image signal processing means which generates digital image data from the pixel signal after synthesizing. In the case where a conditional expression (1) is fulfilled, the number of pixel signals to be synthesized is adjusted so as to be closest to a conditional expression (2), and an effectual spatial sampling period pv of the imaging device is made to be changed.
