<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element manufacturing method that is unaffected by fluctuations of orientation flat and crystal orientation from one semiconductor wafer to another and permits controlling or reducing the quantity of deficiency in a semiconductor substrate. <P>SOLUTION: A laminated structure is formed by stacking with a sealing material via liquid crystals a semiconductor wafer having a pattern region in which a plurality of pixel electrodes are regularly arranged element by element and a transparent substrate over which a transparent electrode is formed (S6). A first reference line is formed by cleaving the semiconductor wafer in a position having a first distance from the pattern region in a first direction, and a second reference line is formed by cleaving the semiconductor wafer in a position having a second distance from the pattern region in a second direction (S7). A plurality of first cut-in grooves are formed with reference to and in parallel to the first reference line, and a plurality of second cut-in grooves are formed with reference to and in parallel to the second reference line (S8).
