Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for loop detection in a Selective Virtual Local Area Network (SVLAN), wherein the loop detection method in the SVLAN includes: extracting a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) label value and a reception port number in a detection message received on a reception port in the SVLAN; searching the index table configured on the reception port to see whether the index record corresponding to the detection message exists, wherein an inner layer VLAN label value is equal to the VLAN label value and the port number is equal to the reception port number in the index record; if the index record corresponding to the detection message exists, determining whether an outer layer VLAN label value in the index records is the same as the inner layer VLAN label value; and if the outer layer VLAN label value is different from the inner layer VLAN label value, determining that no loop exists in the SVLAN. The present invention solves the problem that errors occur in data transmission in a network due to loop detection methods.
