摘要 An access point (12, figure 1, 92, figure 5) is adapted to allow access from at least one user device (14, figures 1 and 4), wherein the access point comprises radio frequency transceiver circuitry for communicating over a wireless link with a base station selected from a plurality of available base stations (18, 20, 22, figures 1 and 4), and wherein the access point has a plurality of possible antenna beam directions. The access point determines an available data rate for each of the plurality of possible antenna beam directions; selects an antenna beam direction based on the available data rates 186; identifies the base station with which a wireless link is established using the selected antenna beam direction 196; detects a signal strength of a signal received from the identified base station using the selected antenna beam direction 198; detects a signal strength of a signal received from the identified base station using at least one other antenna beam direction of the plurality of possible antenna beam directions 200; determines a relationship between the detected signal strengths; determines whether the relationship between the detected signal strengths meets a predetermined criterion 202; and notifies a user if the relationship between the detected signal strengths does not meet the predetermined criterion 206. This can allow the user to be notified if it appears that a change in the location of the device would improve its performance.
