3-oxo-7alpha-methyl 13beta-R17beta-hydroxy gona-4,9-dienes of formula: (where R is C1-4 alkyl) are prepared by first acylating 3-oxo-11beta, 17beta-dihydroxy 13beta-R gona-4-enes, then selectively brominating on the 6-position, dehydro-brominating with lithium halide and treating with an organo-metal compound containing a methyl group to give the 7alpha-methyl derivative. After esterification on the 17beta position and dehydration, the 17beta acyloxy is converted to the 17beta hydroxy form. The 7alpha-methyl steroids are pharmaceutically active.
