The photo-sensitive information may be a hologram layer 2 on a transparent carrier plate 1. The immersion layer may be applied to a vertically disposed plate 1 by a nozzle 5 so that it flows downwardly as a drop 7. Alternatively where the layer is a volatile liquid a fan-heater is used to modulate its thickness. In a further embodiment the layer thickness is modulated by acoustic means. A suitable material for the immersion agent is O-xylene. If the photo-sensitive layer is a photo-chromic or photo-tropic material the immersion layer is applied directly to the said material.
