The copolymers may be prepared by reacting an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer with an epihalohydrin such as epichlorohydrin optionally in the presence of a Lewis acid such as BF 3 , SnCl 4 , AlCl 3 or TiCl 4 , and then reacting the halogen atoms with a tertiary amine such as trimethylamine. The reaction with the epihalohydrin is preferably carried out in a hydrocarbon solvent, and the reaction with the amine, in aqueous or alcoholic solution at between 15‹ and 90‹ C. The copolymers may be made in the form of membranes, either alone, or cast on to a support such as polyester fabric (see Example 13). Preferably, the polymer/epihalohydrin reaction product is formed into the desired form of membrane, and is then reacted with the tertiary amine. The membranes may be used in electrodialytic processes and also as antistatic agents and dyeability improvers for other polymers such as polypropylene (see Examples 10-12).
