[Class 3(i).] Articles of clothing &c. are suspended in rows from two parallel endless chains c, c<5> arranged in vertical planes and intermittently moved in opposite directions. A horizontally oscillating lever F transfers the articles in turn from the front of one chain c to the front of the other c<5>, and they are circulated rom the rear of the chain c<5> to the rear of chain c along a rail s. The members c, F, and c<5> are disposed at descending levels. The articles are suspended by hooks y which take over notches in the links of the chains c, c<5>, and are carried by a hook t<1> on the lever F. The lever F is oscillated by gearing from a motor m from the position P<1> to the position P<5> with an intermediate stop at P<3>. The hook t<1> is rotatable relatively to the lever F by chain and pinion gearing k, k<1>, k<2>, the rotation being such that the article presents the same side outwardly during the turning of the lever F, and during its stop at P<3> makes one or more complete turns through the wheel k being put by a clutch controlled by a stop z<5> into engagement with a uniformly rotating wheel v<3>. The hook t<1> is pivoted at t<2> to the shank t, and is turned down to deposit the article on the chain c<5> when a lever t<4> is allowed to tilt by the knocking away of a retaining pawl t<5> by a stop z<10>. A roller t<6> on the lever t<4> strikes a stop z<4> to restore the lever t<4> into engagement with the pawl t<5>. The intermittent rotation of the chains c, c<5> is effected by a lug f<9> on the lever F which collides with spring- controlled pivoted levers z<2>, z<7> co-operating with rocking levers p, z<8> which through rods g<7> actuate clutches coupling the driving shafts b<5>, m<7> to the chain sprockets g for the requisite length of time. The articles are transferred from the chain c<5> to the chain c by a lever u universally pivoted at u<7> and oscillated by a cord q. The upper end x<6> of the lever u engages a slot s<1> in the rail s. A hook x<2> is pivoted to a lever extension x to turn up to receive the articles from the chain c<5> or down to deposit them on the chain c by sliding and pivoted elements x<3>, x<4>, u<3> which are controlled by a cam u<1>. The extension x is pivoted about a spindle x<1> and is maintained vertical for all positions of the lever u by a counterweight u<4>. The cord q is attached at one end to the end x<6> and has its other end wound round a drum d which is intermittently rotated in one direction by the engagement of a clutch d<5> with a uniformly rotating shaft n, the clutch being controlled by the lever F. During the non-engagement periods the drum d and cord q are retracted by a spring or weight on the lever u.
