1298857 Laminates E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 24 April 1970 [6 June 1969] 19892/70 Heading B5N A laminate of thermoplastic synthetic resin comprises a first moulded thermoplastic film 4, having a plurality of ribs 6, 8 forming an integral part of the moulded film and projecting from a surface thereof so as to form therewith a smooth radius 13, the ends of said ribs remote from the film being flanged in a direction parallel to said film, and a second thermoplastic film 12 heatbonded to the outer surface of the flanges 10 of said ribs, the width of the flanges at the top of each rib being at least twice the thickness of the rib, each said flange forming with the second film a smooth radius at each side of each flange, the breakage strength of the junction between said flanges and said second film being at least as great as that of the remainder of said laminate. Thermoplastic synthetic resins which may be used are polyethylene, polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene, ionomers, copolymers of ethylene with an α,#- unsaturated carboxylic acid, vinyl chloride polymers, tetrafluoroethylene polymers, chlorotrifluoroethylene polymers, homo- and copolymers of vinyl acetate, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polycaprolactam, copolyamides, oxymethylene polymers, polycarbonates, ABS resin, polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate. In a preferred embodiment, two sets of ribs 6 and 8 extend at right-angles to each other. The laminate may be made using the method and apparatus described in Specification 1298858. |
