A digital broadcasting system and a processing method are provided to be strong against errors when transmitting supplementary data through channels and be compatible even with an existing VSB(Vestigial Side Band) receiver, thereby receiving the supplementary data without errors even in a channel where ghost and noise are serious. A digital broadcasting transmitting method comprises the following steps of: performing additional encoding and byte expansion of inputted enhanced data divided according to preset conditions, and outputting the enhanced data; receiving the enhanced data, grouping the data into plural continuous enhanced data packet units, dividing the enhanced data group into plural areas, and assigning the inputted enhanced data to a corresponding area according to characteristics of each area; and additionally encoding only effective data bits among the enhanced data assigned to each area within the enhanced data group, and performing a trellis encoding process. |
