Provided are a projection device and a projection-type video display device capable of displaying a plurality of videos, reducing the degree to which speckles stand out, and reducing the size of an optical system. The projection device (20) comprises: an optical element (50) which includes a hologram recording medium (55) onto which information is multiple-recorded at locations in such a way that coherent light is diffused in a plurality of regions; an illumination device (60) which irradiates the coherent light onto the optical element in such a way that the coherent light scans the hologram recording medium (55); spatial optical modulators (30-1 to 30-3) which are illuminated by the coherent light that is incident on the hologram recording medium (55) from the illumination device (60) and that is diffused in the plurality of regions; and projection optical systems (25-1 to 25-3) which project, onto a corresponding screen, modulated images obtained from the spatial optical modulators. The coherent light that is incident and diffused at locations of the hologram recording medium is superimposed on and illuminates the plurality of spatial optical modulators.
