A phase difference plate manufacturing method comprises the steps of: forming a layered body, comprising a resin layer (a) which contains a resin (A) having a positive intrinsic birefringence, and a resin layer (b), disposed on one surface of the resin layer (a), which contains a resin (B) having a negative intrinsic birefringence; extending the layered body in one direction at a temperature T1; and thereafter extending the layered body in another direction which is approximately orthogonal to said extension direction at a temperature T2 that is lower than the temperature T1, obtaining a phase difference plate. Thus, a phase difference plate is obtained that satisfies specified conditions, wherein a slow axis of the resin layer (a) whereupon the extension process is carried out is approximately parallel to a slow axis of the resin layer (b) whereupon the extension process is carried out, the intra-surface retardation in the resin layer (a) whereupon the extension process is carried out is designated (Rea) and the NZ coefficient thereof is designated (NZa), and the intra-surface retardation in the resin layer (b) whereupon the extension process is carried out is designated (Reb) and the NZ coefficient thereof is designated (NZb). |
