<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide welding equipment which enables a target position of weld metal by a welding torch to be fixed, prevents the occurrence of weld defects, and reliably prevents the weld metal from depositing inside a nozzle by cooling the nozzle, and to provide a welding method using the welding equipment. <P>SOLUTION: The welding equipment performs groove welding of two plates 8 to be welded, and includes a backing material 3 and a welding torch 2. The backing material 3 is slidable along a groove 9 and includes: a substrate 6 which ranges over the groove 9 and comes in contact with the two plates 8 to be welded; and a protrusion part 7 which protrudes from one end of the substrate 6 to the inside of the groove 9.
