<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ethanol that can effectively produce the ethanol while suppressing proliferation or action of bacteria. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided the method for producing ethanol including a process for culturing microorganisms capable of performing ethanol fermentation in the presence of ethanol having concentration enough to suppress the action of the bacteria wherein the ethanol having the concentration enough to suppress the action of the bacteria exists from the start of the culture.
