<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical axis windmill having lightweight and rigid blades, ensuring safety by preventing the rotation radius of the windmill from increasing, having good start-up performance and rotation efficiency of the windmill by special shape and arrangement of the blades of the windmill, and having no restriction on the installation place. <P>SOLUTION: A blade 3 is disposed through a vertical rotational axis 1 and circular end plates 2 attached at the top and bottom of the vertical rotational axis 1 such that the side of the curved surface X of the blade 3 faces the side of the vertical rotational axis 1. A first recess 4, a second recess 5, a third recess 6, and a fourth recess 7 are formed on the side of the curved surface X of the blade 3 so that each has a wide opening on the side of the leading edge 3a and becomes narrower toward the trailing edge 3b and a through-hole passing through a lower part of the curved surface X is formed.
