A document viewing system of the present invention by which a user accesses a document upon a communication network to view the document acquires a viewing area of the document, and by using the acquired viewing area of the document and position information recorded in a storage unit which is position information indicating the positions of document elements which are component elements of the document, document elements which contain the positions in the viewing area are identified as document elements which the user has viewed.
