<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cryptographic method that simultaneously secures electronic communication and helps fight spam. <P>SOLUTION: Public key cryptographic techniques are used to limit the quantity of bad traffic, such as spam, without encumbering normal traffic. An outgoing message 28 includes a result obtained from a cryptographic operation on message data 26 from a sender 20. The result is verified using cryptographic techniques by a recipient 22. Messages verified successfully are routed to a trusted folder 34. Messages that fail the verification are routed to a regular folder 36 that may be discarded at will. The verification process thus acts as a filter 32 between trusted and other messages.
