The column has an energy absorbing element (10) i.e. modular insert, arranged in a guide pipe (3). A latching unit (12) is form-fittingly engaged with a detent structure that is arranged at a mantel pipe (2) along adjustable regions of the mantle pipe. The energy absorbing element is front and rearwardly moved in the latching unit and engaged in the detent structure and coupled to an adjusting unit (4) by an elastic coupling unit (20) in a non-engaging position with the detent structure and an engaging position corresponding to a closing position of the adjusting unit.
