An internally-cooled centrifugal compressor (10) having a shaped casing (26) a diaphragm (32) disposed within said shaped casing (26) having a gas side and a coolant side so that heat from a gas flowing though the gas side is extracted via the coolant side. An impeller (28) disposed within the diaphragm (32) has a stage inlet (22) on one side and an stage outlet (24) for delivering a pressurized gas to a downstream connection through the stage outlet coupling (14). The coolant side of said diaphragm (32) includes at least one passageway for directing a coolant in a substantially counter-flow direction from the flow of gas through the gas side.
