Provided are a novel polyester resin that can be used for producing a molding product excellent in heat resistance, and a method of producing the polyester resin. The polyester resin includes: structural units represented by the following formulae (1) and (2): where: R1 represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group which may be substituted, or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may be substituted; and A represents the formula (3): in which the polyester resin contains the structural unit represented by the formula (2) in an amount of 3.8 mol % or more to 9.7 mol % or less in the total of the structural units represented by the formulae (1) and (2).
