The method involves changing a guide profile of a guide element for transferring a package (2) to a strapping position. The guide element is provided with two relatively movable guide segments (7a,7b) that are coupled to each other by a flexible connecting unit. The connecting unit is also provided as a base for guiding a strapping band (1) in the guide element. An independent claim is also included for a strapping device for applying strapping band to a package with a closure head.
