Polyester film having a hydrophilic coating

A polyester film (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate film) is provided with hydrophilic coating on its surface(s). The hydrophilic coating is formed of dried coating composition comprising water, sulfopolyester, and surfactant. Independent claims are included for: (1) a hydrophilic coating composition; (2) polyester film production by producing a film via extrusion or co-extrusion, stretching the film, coating the film with the coating composition, and heat-setting the stretched and coated film; (3) packaging material for foods and other consumable items comprising polyester film; and (4) polymeric surfaces or polymeric spectacle lenses or medical diagnosis device comprising a coating.
