A patient lifting device 10 for lifting the posterior region 13 of a patient 12 lying on their back comprises an inflatable lifting member in the form of a first conical inflatable bladder 20 locatable beneath the posterior region 13 of the patient 12 and a lateral support member in the form of a second conical inflatable bladder 22 locatable alongside the patient 12, wherein the first and second inflatable bladders 20, 22 are preferably in fluid communication. Each of the inflatable bladders 20, 22 has a base (20a, 22a, Figure 3) located in use adjacent to the lower body region (e.g. upper thigh region) of the patient 12 and an apex (20b, 22b, Figure 3) located in use adjacent to the upper body region (e.g. chest region) of the patient 12. A patient lifting device 10 is preferably disposed along each side of the patient 12, the two patient lifting devices 10 together forming a patient lifting arrangement which can be used to facilitate the insertion and removal of a bed pan (16, Figure 8) beneath the patient 12.
