1505719 Heating and cooling buildings J J WHALEN 9 April 1975 [22 April 1974] 14628/75 Headings F4U and F4V A heating and cooling system for the rooms of a building, each of which rooms contains a heat exchange unit 18, comprises a cold water circuit having a chiller 10, supply and return piping 14, 16, a pump 24, a stop valve 36, a three-way valve 56 leading to a bypass 64 and a check valve 42; and a hot water circuit having a heater 12, supply and return piping 20, 22, a pump 26, a stop valve 38, a three-way valve 58 leading to a bypass 66 and a check valve 40. In normal operation of the system, either hot or cold water, or both if necessary, is supplied to each heat exchange unit 18 under the control of outside thermostats 44, 46 and individual room thermostats which control a fan in each individual room unit 18. Means are also provided, in the form of conduits 28, 30 and stop valves 32, 34 for combining the circuits. In operation of the system on particularly hot days, the hot water circuit including pump 26 but not the heater which is closed off by valves 38, 40, is incorporated into the cold water circuit by opening valves 32, 34. On especially cold days, the cold water circuit is similarly incorporated into the hot water circuit. The heat exchange units 18 are in the form of a cabinet having two compartments, one compartment housing the cold water supply and return piping and the other the hot water supply and return piping. The piping may have fins. Louvered air inlets and outlets are provided in the bottom and top respectively of the cabinet. Separate motor and fan units are preferably provided. If a single fan is employed, selective heating and cooling is achieved by dampers.
