A method as described for verifying the authenticity of a product, comprising the steps of: receiving a plurality of authentication labels, the authentication labels each comprising one of a series of unique identifiers, the series of unique identifiers being stored in an authentication database; applying each of the authentication labels to a series of products; entering in the database product information corresponding to the series of products to which the label has been applied; associating the product information with the series of unique identifiers in the database; communicating to the issuer of the labels validation information concerning the products to which the authentication labels have been applied. A complementary method of verifying the authenticity of a product is disclosed, comprising the steps of: issuing a plurality of authentication labels to a manufacturer of a product, the authentication labels each comprising one of a series of unique identifiers, the series of unique identifiers being stored in an authentication database; receiving from the manufacturer product information corresponding to the series of products to which the label has been applied; associating the product information with the series of unique identifiers in the database; receiving from the manufacturer validation information corresponding to the products to which the authentication labels have been applied.
