INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

The engine has a cylinder head (18) with a dished recess (20) forming the end of the cylinder (14). The inlet and exhaust valvs (22b, 30b) open into this recess. The inlet passage (28) in the head above the valve is spiralled to give the entering mixture a vortex motion. The piston (16) has a crown (52) which is dished outwards to match the recess in the head. A very small gap (S) is left between them at top dead centre. A deeper recess (44) in the centre of the crown of the piston forms the combustion chamber. The valves (22b, 30b) partly overlap this recess.
