PURPOSE: A backlight unit, a liquid crystal display device using the same, and a driving method thereof are provided to simplify the internal structure and operating method of LED(Light Emitting Diode) driving chips. CONSTITUTION: A backlight(14) comprises a plurality of LED groups. The backlight generates light. A backlight controller(16) controls on/off timing of the backlight by an external dimming control signal. The backlight controller detects the amount of control currents outputted for controlling the backlight. The backlight controller compensates for the detected amount and the amount of control currents outputted by a compensation control value set by a user. The backlight controller supplies the compensated control current to the backlight.
