OPAL, METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME, AND COATING MATERIAL AND PRINTED MATTER USING THE OPAL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide opal, which exhibits different hues even in the case when it is viewed in a planar view from the same direction, to be rich in play of color, and further which is easily dispersed in coating materials and hardly causes coating unevenness when it is used as a brightener of the coating materials.

SOLUTION: The opal 1 is composed of a silica particle group 2 having a plurality of different crystal structures. A groove part 5 is formed between one silica particle group 2 having one crystal structure and another silica particle group 2 having another crystal structure different from the one crystal structure.
