The cleansing composition comprises an alkyl ether carboxylic acid or salt thereof wherein the alkyl ether carboxylic acid or salt thereof is represented by the general formula (1) (in the formula, R1 represents a C4-22 alkyl group, n represents a number 0-20, and M represents a hydrogen atom, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or organic ammonium); R1 contains two or more alkyl groups; the mean number of carbons of R1 is 10.8 to 12.5; and 8 to 27 mass% of n=0 components, 28 to 38 mass% total of n=1 components and n=2 components, and 10 mass% or more total of n=6 components are contained.
