<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine equipped with a highly durable coating film that has low heat conduction and low heat capacity, is excellent in thermal insulation and is excellent in mitigation performance to explosion pressure etc. inside a combustion chamber or repeated stress resulting from thermal expansion and thermal shrinkage, and a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine 10, anodic oxidation coating films 61, 62, 63 and 64 are formed on all or a portion of a wall that faces the combustion chamber NS. The anodic oxidation coating films 61, 62, 63 and 64 each have a structure that is provided with a bonding region in which each of hollow cells C forming the coating film is bonded to the adjacent hollow cells C and a non-bonding region in which three or more adjacent hollow cells C are not bonded to each other.
