A secondary battery has: an electrode group having sheet-like positive and negative electrode plates that comprise an active material coated on both surfaces of metal foil and that are wound in a planar shape around a winding axis with separators interposed therebetween the electrode plates, the electrode group also being provided with exposed metal film sections not coated with the active material on each end of the positive and negative electrode plates in the direction of the winding axis; a battery container that houses the electrode group and has a battery can and a battery door; and positive and negative electrode external terminals each electrically connected to the exposed metal film sections of the positive and negative electrode plates. Each winding end on the exposed metal film sections of the positive and negative electrode plates faces the inner surface of the battery container with conductive material interposed respectively therebetween.
