The purpose of the invention is to limit the reduction of insulation resistance between the electrode and the case in electrically heated catalysts (EHC). The EHC (1) is provided with a heating element (3) that generates heat with the passage of electric current and heats the catalyst; a case (4) that houses the heating element; an insulating component (5) that is provided between the heating element (3) and the case (4) and insulates electricity; an electrode (7) that passes through an electrode chamber (9), which is a space between the inner wall of the case (4) and the outer surface of the heating element (3), and is connected to the heating element (3); and a communicating pathway connecting the electrode chamber with parts of the internal combustion engine exhaust system other than where the EHC is provided.
