<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator preventing the life of a battery from decreasing and achieving a high level of safety, and to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte battery prepared therewith. <P>SOLUTION: A microporous film 35 has surface roughness in maximum height being 30% of the film thickness or lower in the case where the film thickness is in the range of 5 to 12 μm, or surface roughness in maximum height being 4 μm or lower in the case where the film thickness is thicker than 12 μm and is 25 μm at the maximum. The pore number N calculated using the formula (1) is 200 per 1 μm<SP POS="POST">2</SP>or greater.
