The method involves rotating an endless conveyor belt or an endless conveyor chain of a belt conveyor around deflecting devices. The belt or chain is electromagnetically driven by a linear motor in association with soft-magnetic secondary parts. The motor is arranged in a stator and between upper and lower runs, and coils (3) of a multi-phase powered system are provided with a two-sided construction part. The construction part is connected with the secondary parts at the belt for generating force in a feed direction under prevention of normal forces. An independent claim is also included for a belt conveyor that comprises linear motors.
