<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toner capable of suppressing inhibition in low-temperature fixing and decrease in chargeability in a high temperature and high humidity environment although the toner has a large nitrogen content, and capable of giving a high-quality image. <P>SOLUTION: The toner comprises toner particles containing a resin essentially comprising polyester, a colorant and wax, and has a surface nitrogen amount ranging from 1.0 to 10.0 atomic% measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on the surface of the toner particles. The toner particles have a specific surface area St ranging from 0.60 to 2.00 m<SP POS="POST">2</SP>/g; and when the toner particles are dispersed in water to measure an acidic value, denoted as Ut (mgKOH/g), of the toner particles, an acidic value per surface area Ut/St of the toner particles ranges from 0.2 to 1.5 mgKOH/m<SP POS="POST">2</SP>.
