PURPOSE:A polymer emulsion having stable chemical and mechanical properties, obtained by copolymerizing a radical-polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer with a specified monomer containing an unsaturated amidophenyl-substituted alkanesulfonic acid group in an aqueous medium. CONSTITUTION:A radical-polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer (e.g., styrene or ethyl acrylate) is copolymerized with about 0.05-40wt% monomer containing an unsaturated amidophenyl-substituted alkanesulfonic acid group of the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each H or a lower alkyl, X is H, an alkali metal ion, an alkaline earth metal ion or ammonium, e.g., 2-acrylamido-2- phenylpropanesulfonic acid, in an aqueous medium in the absence of any emulsifier or in the presence of a small amount of an emulsifier.
