<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact lighting device low in power loss and noise, and a lighting apparatus using the same. <P>SOLUTION: An LED lighting device comprises a DC power supply circuit 2 which receives power from a commercial AC power supply 1 to output a DC voltage, and an LED module 3 with a plurality of LED elements which receive the DC voltage from the DC power supply circuit 2 to light up. The LED module 3 contains a switching element Q1 connected in series with the plurality of LED elements and controls the effective current flowing through the LED elements by turning on or off the switching element Q1. Furthermore, the switching element Q1 is made of a wide bandgap semiconductor element so that the loss at the time of switching can be reduced and heat generation can be limited.
